Sylvester Miller, Class of 1961, passed away. Harold Maze, also Class of 1961, tipped me off about the sad happening.

Sy’s funeral will be noon Saturday, April 13 in Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 4 Pine Street, Carolina after calling hours that begin at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Fairmont’s Grandview Memorial Gardens.

His Carolina parents were Goldie Cooper Miller and Walter Miller.

Sy served his country in the Navy, moved to Cleveland, worked as a carpenter and in the water department.

When he retired he returned to his Carolina birthplace.

Sy had prominent roles in the Shiloh Baptist Church and became a deacon in 2004. Sy’s brother, Charles Miller, became a pastor.

Sylvester D. Miller, affectionately known to his friends and family as “Sy” or “Ves” went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 31, 2024 Sylvester was born June 2, 1943, in Carolina, WV, the son of the late Walter and Goldie (Cooper) Miller.

Sylvester graduated from Monongah High School in 1961. He served in the U.S. Navy. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Navy, he resided in Cleveland, OH where he worked for the Carpenters Local Union and The Cleveland water Department. After retiring, he returned to Carolina, WV.

Sylvester joined Shiloh Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful member. HE held various positions in the church, which included Board of Trustee, Treasurer, and was ordained as a Deacon in January 2004.

Sylvester was a genuine, kind hearted soul with a huge infectious smile. He made it a point to be a friend to any and every one he met. He was an avid sports fan. He loved watching his grandchildren play sports and his favorite channel was ESPN.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his brother, Pastor Charles Miller of Carolina, WV; son, Walter Mendell (Regina) Miller of Carolina, WV; daughter Coilynn (CoCo) Buford of Pittsburgh, PA; former wife and best friend, Gladys Lee Miller of Fairmont, WV; grandsons, Devin Miller of Morgantown, WV and Tariq Miller of Carolina, WV; granddaughter, Leah Buford of Pittsburgh, PA; nephew, Terry Burgess of Seattle, WA; nephew, Darrell Marbury of Carolina, WV; and a host of cousins and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Starr.

The family will receive friends at Shiloh Baptist Church, 4 Pine Street in Carolina, on Saturday, April 13, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The funeral will be at the church on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Wesley Q. Dobbs officiating and Pastor Charles Miller eulogizing. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.domicofh.com.
