1968 MONONGAH HIGH QUARTERBACK RETIRES FROM COACHING
Nick
Saban, 72, retires from coaching
Monongah High’s 1968 state championship team quarterback Nick Saban is retiring at the age of 72.
He has been head coach at Alabama for 17 years and won 201 games, only 31 less than Paul Bear Bryant won at Alabama.
2 coaches & 433 victories awesome. Probably no other college can make that statement in football.
Brother, as those from Marion County still call him (a nickname his older sister, later a teacher in Monongah, gave him when he was born), won 11 SEC titles for Alabama.
Never had a losing season in his 28-year coaching career. Oh, brother!
He had two .500 seasons at Michigan State. That’s as “bad” as it got for Brother.
The 24 seasons between Bryan and Saban were NOT as glorious for Alabama. Coaching is the critical ingredient for success.
Nick was 292-71-1 as a college head coach, including a national title at LSU.
He had twice as many national titles are any other coach during his reign.
Vegas immediately increased the odds of winning the 2004 season national title from 6-1 to 8-1 when news of Saban’s retirement become public.
Saban’s
contract with Alabama ran through 2028.
His net
worth is listed at $60 million but that might be a low estimate. Since 2012 he
never received less than $5 million and up to about $10 million from Alabama.
For
Brother the Crimson Tide was a Green (as in money) Tide!
QB Nick Saban is a Lion who roared loudly as a college coach!
And many in Marion County have great memories of Brother, too. After I first published this article, I got these responses:
