OTIS "SARGE" SHAVER CELEBRATES HIS 94th BIRTHDAY

OTIS "SARGE" SHAVER AT 94 WITH GRANDDAUGHTER RACHAEL SHAVER

Kudos to Otis ‘Sarge’ Shaver, 94 years old!!!

Otis Shaver, Class of 1948, reached his 94th birthday this year.

Otis’ sister, the Rev. Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Shaver Wycoff, was 82 in 2014 when she still was living on the old home place at the Shaver Farm.

Jim Shaver is their brother.

Tom Dean, Class of 1949, who lives in Altavista, Virginia, is a good friend and classmate of Jim.

Sarge recalled for me a while back:

“ I attended Monongah Grade School grads 5  through 8 and then Monongah High.

"In 1952 I purchased my 1st new Ford from George Hall in Shinnston.

“As a lad I met Rome Lawson. I went to MHS with his grandson, Dr. William “Bill” Lawson. We were in the MHS Band.

"The late retired Major Carrol Laswell, Bill & myself were regulars during our Monongah High days at the Tropea store. We had a bag lunch-sometime we had the money & bought pop, In the winter we would sit  around the #2 Burnside stove and have lunch.

"I knew Faye Smith & family. His wife Martha taught us in Monongah Grade School 7th grade.

“I knew Vaughn & Bill Gaskin.

"I have been to Wade Wall's home. I was in school with Joyce.

“My 1st shopping trip (about 1936) with my Mom was at the A&P. We walked from the Shaver Farm on the old Monongah road 1½ miles each way. The manager was Lynn Findley. A 3# bag of 8 0’Clock Coffee was 39 cents.

"I have been in the George Murphy home as a child. A friend of my grandfather, Wayne Shaver, also of Shaver Farm.

“I knew Claude Domico & some family, I was in school with Chester.

"The plumbing shop (Tony DeMary) I passed going to school. Was in school with Jim & Ann.

“The dentist Dr. Weeden C. Koon was my great uncle and a veterinarian. His sister Cynthia Rose Koon (Shaver) was my great grandmother, married James Otis Shaver (the farm) where I was born & lived till 1954.

"I have been in the junk yard of Jake Pickus that boomed during World War Two.

“I also knew R. Lee Harr &  was in school with Marion Harr, his daughter.

"I knew Fred Rogers and attended school with Ron & Tom Rogers (we are related).

"William “Bill” Lawson & wife Sadie had a restaurant & tavern. They are the parents of Dr. Bill Lawson. We schooled together.”

Kudos on being one of the few people older than me still alive, Sarge. I enjoyed our reunion at the 100th Monongah High Alumni Banquet earlier this year.
