CATCHING UP WITH THE AMAZING SALLY WOOD TARLEY!!!
SALLY WOOD TARLEY
A ROUSING TOAST TO A MOST AMAZING WOMAN
Catching up with
Sally Wood Tarley
After persistent prodding by me Sally Wood Tarley, Class of
1959, provided me details on one the most amazing lives by a Lion!
Sally taught freshman and junior English at Monongah High
(1966-69)/
Then became an instructor at Fairmont State College, where
she studied business and education on an academic scholarship, with a one-year
contract that became a 34-year career (1972-2002) after Sally got her masters
degree in education from WVU.
Sally married in 1961 to Marco Tarley and moved to
Glenville, where she finished her degree -- in English and Business Principles –
at Glenville College. While having TWO children?
That was son Ty and daughter MaryLynn. Six years later she
had another son, Jay.
Ty passed away in 2008.
Jay lives in Fairmont and works at National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health.
MaryLynn Tarley Sacco lives in Richmond, Virginia and works
for Capital One. Sally added: “She lights up my life and I love her endlessly.”
MaryLynn
shot back: “When your mother is the ultimate, words and
pictures just don’t do her justice.”
I agree. Coming up with an article worthy of
Sally’s accomplishments is one of most daunting tasks that includes a 42-year
newspaper career.
Sally has 10 grandchildren, including 2 currently in high
school. 7 of the other 8 are college graduates.
All are employed and living in New York City, Austin,
Texas, Memphis, Smithfield, North
Carolina and Fairmont.
Sally lives in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where she
is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Hilton Head Art League, the
Hilton Head symphony Orchestra League and the PEO Sisterhood, founded in 1869
to promote educational opportunities to female worldwide. Its headquarters is
in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sally gets around, too. She has been to Europe three times
and took trips to California, Hawaii, Arizona, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida,
Georgia and many other states.
Sally and Patty Timms
Davidson, Class of 1958, still stay in touch. Patty married Merlin Davidson, Class of 1957, quarterback of the 1955 Monongah
High state champs football team and the 1956 state runnerup team. And was on
the basketball and baseball teams for 4 years, including the 1955 team that won
Monongah’s only state baseball title.
I saw Sally
hanging out with Sue Ahouse Schrader and Doris Carpenter Rogers, both Class of
1971, at Monongah High Alumni Reunions.
Boy,
Sally is one person who doesn’t let a lot of moss grow under her feet. Good for
her!
