Bernice Grandstaff passed away in 2017; just found out

 

Bernice Grandstaff, Class of 1950, passed away July 12, 2017 but I just discovered this sad news while Googling names of my classmates I wasn’t sure about.

She went by Bernice Grandstaff Maranville when we exchanged information in 2010 and she living in Kernesville, North Carolina.

Bernice attended the 2010 Monongah High Alumni Banquet, the 60th anniversary of our Class of 1950 graduation.

I have a photo of her talking to Ramona Fullen Michalski, Class of 1949, and the late Bob Kasper, Class of 1950, my best friend for 80 years till Satch, as we called him, passed away.

And with her daughter, Carole Maranville.

And with Don “Jake” Halpenny, also Class of 1950, who lives in Monongah, again with Bob Kasper.

And with Kathryn Toothman Crim, Class of 1950, who I can’t find out still is among us or passed away. If you know positively, email me at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com and I’ll do an article on Kathryn.

Bernice Grandstaff Obituary

Bernice was born on September 20, 1936 and passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017. Bernice was a resident of Maryland. She was a 1954 graduate of St. Mary High School in Hagerstown. Services will be held Saturday July 15 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home 1331 Eastern Blvd. North Hagerstown MD. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday July 14 2017 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Interment will be at the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park Hagerstown MD. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church 224 West Washington Street Hagerstown MD 21740.

  Military hero Leon Charles Trader Passes away   Leon Charles Trader, who started with the Class of 1966 at Monongah High but left to join the Army. He was wounded in Vietnam, earning him the Purple Heart.   Everson resident Joseph Bombard , Class of 1966 along with Joe’s wife, Marva Holt Bombard, told me:   “ John Olesky , I knew Mr. Trader very well. He would have graduated class of 1966 but he quit school and joined the Army and was sent to Viet Nam where he was injured and received the Purple Heart.   “We grew up together in Everson. We hunted, fished and played kids sports together. Both our fathers were coal miners in those days. We played our sports games in a pasture field. JAMIE DAVIS RICHARDS PASSES AWAY. DAUGHTER OF MINNIE DAVIS AND CHICK DAVIS

  Jamie Davis Richards passes away   Jamie Davis Richards passed away. Her parents are Mary Ann “Minnie” Davis and Harry W. “Chick” Davis. Jamie’s siblings are Dianna Davis Fugera, Class of 1975 and Mark Davis, Class of 1978. Jamie married Tony Richards.   Monongah Mayor Johnboy Palmer posted: “ It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of Jamie Richards passing this evening after her courageous battle with cancer. Please join me in keeping her entire family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Jamie's strength and resilience will always be remembered. Rest in peace, Jamie.”

          BOB AND SHERRY MYERS COLANERO BURIAL JANUARY 12 Bob and Sherry Myers Colanero burial January 12   Bob Colanero, Class of 1960 passed away December 11 and his widow, Sherry Myers Colanero,   passes away two days later.   They will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with military honors on January 12, 2024. I missed it but Jim McDaniel, Class of 1960, who lives in Behoboth Beach, Delaware, sent me the sad news, posting “So much sadness in the world.” Jim served in the Air Force for 23 years. His grandfather, Carroll Currey, owned the hotel, bank and movie theater in Monongah, all in the same block. Carroll also had a car dealership on 7th street in Fairmont. Bob’s sister, Judith Nicola Colanero, predeceased Bob. Another sibling, Danny Colanero, lies in North Carolina with wife Linda. Judy’s brother, Paul Colanero, passed away in Georgia.
