GO TO TOWN IN THE MONONGAH TOWN HALL ON FRIDAY & CHEER FOR HUSKIES TO BEAT WEST FAIRMONT!!!
Marion County guaranteed to have state
high school football champions in Friday game
Monongah Mayor Johnboy Palmer has
arranged for a Friday, December 1 party in the Monongah Town Hall to watch the
North Marion Huskies (which absorbed Monongah High in September 1979) and West
Fairmont meet to decide which Marion County team gets the 2023 West Virginia
state high school title.
Game starts at 7 pm in Wheeling and on a
projector that will spew the football contest onto a huge screen in the
Monongah Town Hall, where my sister, Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1955, and
me, Class of 1950, conducted our J&J party that drew 40 Lions and Monongah
residents a few years back.
Folding metal chairs included. Or bring
your own lawn chairs.
Popcorn and bottled water will be
available.
Johnboy added:
“Bring a non-perishable food item and
place it in the box you want to win, whether it be the Polar Bears' box or the
Huskies' box. All non-perishable food items will be donated to the Marion
County Soup Opera, so let's help those in need while having a great time!”
Jackie has been helping the Soup Opera
for decades. So have I, in my own way.
By the way, West Fairmont (as Fairmont
Senior) won the state title in 1903, 1907, 1924, 1929,
Monongah High, before being absorbed
into North Marion, won state titles in 1952, 1955, 1968 with Nick Saban as its
quarterback, 1969 and in 1973, with Jay Feltz the QB (his father, Jim Feltz,
coached 1952 and 1955 champs, and his son completed the circle in 1973).
Jay’s son, also named Jay Feltz, was the Eastside
quarterback and played in South Carolina’s 2009 North-South high school
all-star game.
And I suspect the people watching in the Monongah
Town Hall will be rooting for North Marion, where Monongah’s students go after graduating
from elementary school.
