Minnie Harbert passes away

Minnie Harbert, born in Monongah to John and Mary Manzo Hinerman, passed away Sunday, October 1.

She resided in Idamay and was the widow of Farmington High and Fairmont State graduate David Keith Harbert. They were married for 63 years.

Their five children all live in Maryland – John Harbert, Paul Harbert, James Harbert, Kathy Harbert Kolson, who lives in Edgewater, Maryland, and Joseph Harbert.

Minnie was predeceased by her best friend, Charlotte Martin.

Dave’s father was Sam Harbert, brother of former Thoburn Elementary principal Frank Harbert, who married Goldie Harbert. Their son, Donald Duane Harbert, Class of 1951,

There’s another David Harbert, whose parents are Donald Duane Harbert, Class of 1951, and late wife Mary. Duane Harbert is Frank Harbert’s son. Duane’s mother was Goldie Harbert.

Donald Duane Harbert, who we called Duane, lost his wife, Mary Dunham Harbert, in 2019 and his son, Tommy, in 2014 at the age of 51.

Duane was part of the facetiously named Gang That Terrorized Marion County (we were rascals but not a terror in our teens) which included Bob “Satch” Kasper, Class of 1950, my friend for 85 years till he passed away; Tony Eates, also Class of 1950, who lives in Fairmont with wife Lucy Cann Eates; Frank “Bruno” Franze, also Class of 1950, who lives in Slidell, Louisiana after out-living two wives; retired West Virginia Highway Patrol Officer Steven “Bucky” Satterfield, Class of 1950, who lives in St. Albans; the late Lawrence “Sonny” Godby, also Class of 1950 (seeing a pattern here?); Donald Jake Halpenny, yep Class of 1950, who lives in Fairmont; and, all deceased, Ronnie “Cooley” Delovich, Anthony “Plumber” DeMary, Class of 1950 (of course), Joe Manzo, who survived combat in Korea; Jim “Judge” Starcher, another Class of 1950, and me, also Class of 1950, John Olesky, who grew up on Church Street as the son of Italian immigrant Lena Futten Olesky and John W. Olesky, Sr., whose ancestors came to America from Poland.

Harberts proliferate in Monongah High history.

Cindy Sue Brooks Harbert, Class of 1975.

Danny Harbert, Class of 1975.

Sandra Sanders Harbert, Class of 1965.
