Mary Lou Retton ‘fighting for her life’

 

Mary Lou Retton, who went from Fairmont to Olympic glory in gymnastics, is “fighting for her life” and unable to breathe on her own in intensive care in a Texas hospital. At the age of 55!!!

Pneumonia is the culprit.

A fund-raising drive byMary Lou Retton's daughter, who said her mom didn't have insurance, had a goal of $50,000. So far, $175,000 has been raised and the numbers keeps going higher and higher!!!

Mary Lou was 16 when she dazzled the world at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles when she landed on her feet with a perfect 10 off the vault to win the individual all-around gold medal 5 WEEKS AFTER KNEE SURGERY!!!

Mary Lou had FIVE medals in 1984, including in floor exercise and uneven parallel bars.

Mary Lou has 4 children.

Mary Lou Retton Drive in Fairmont, where she lived, was renamed to honor her.

  Military hero Leon Charles Trader Passes away   Leon Charles Trader, who started with the Class of 1966 at Monongah High but left to join the Army. He was wounded in Vietnam, earning him the Purple Heart.   Everson resident Joseph Bombard , Class of 1966 along with Joe’s wife, Marva Holt Bombard, told me:   “ John Olesky , I knew Mr. Trader very well. He would have graduated class of 1966 but he quit school and joined the Army and was sent to Viet Nam where he was injured and received the Purple Heart.   “We grew up together in Everson. We hunted, fished and played kids sports together. Both our fathers were coal miners in those days. We played our sports games in a pasture field. We where really close.”   Fishing buddies is correct.   Jamie Davis Richards passes away   Jamie Davis Richards passed away. Her parents are Mary Ann “Minnie” Davis and Harry W. “Chick” Davis. Jamie’s siblings are Dianna Davis Fugera, Class of 1975 and Mark Davis, Class of 1978. Jamie married Tony Richards.   Monongah Mayor Johnboy Palmer posted: “ It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of Jamie Richards passing this evening after her courageous battle with cancer. Please join me in keeping her entire family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Jamie's strength and resilience will always be remembered. Rest in peace, Jamie.”

          BOB AND SHERRY MYERS COLANERO BURIAL JANUARY 12 Bob and Sherry Myers Colanero burial January 12   Bob Colanero, Class of 1960 passed away December 11 and his widow, Sherry Myers Colanero,   passes away two days later.   They will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with military honors on January 12, 2024. I missed it but Jim McDaniel, Class of 1960, who lives in Behoboth Beach, Delaware, sent me the sad news, posting “So much sadness in the world.” Jim served in the Air Force for 23 years. His grandfather, Carroll Currey, owned the hotel, bank and movie theater in Monongah, all in the same block. Carroll also had a car dealership on 7th street in Fairmont. Bob’s sister, Judith Nicola Colanero, predeceased Bob. Another sibling, Danny Colanero, lies in North Carolina with wife Linda. Judy’s brother, Paul Colanero, passed away in Georgia.
