OKLA EDGELL'S HARROWING WORLD WAR II EXPERIENCE BECOMES HIS FANTASTIC BOOK
Okla Edgell
His book recalls Okla Edgell’s amazing
WWII survival
Okla Edgell, at Monongah High till he entered the miliary, at
the age of 95 wrote a book about his harrowing World War II experiences, “Some Gave All: A Tailgunner’s Perspective on WWII,”
which was written with his stepson William Decker.
Okla, who grew up on
Harter Hill near Worthington and is married to Arlene Marteney Decker Edgell, Class
of 1951, was a prisoner of war, survived the crash when his plane was shot down
in Holland even though he had 12 bullet holes in his clothes which only grazed his
body but his chest was split down the middle, there was shrapnel in his body
and his fingernails were burnt off, and was walked to his execution ramp but before
being taken instead to a POW camp.
The war ended 5 weeks
later.
He became an electrician
at West Virginia Electric for 10 years, later working on federal dams on the
Columbia River in Oregon and Washington till his 1999 retirement.
56 years after they had
last seen each other Okla and Arlene Marteney Decker Edgell, Class of 1951,
married in 2006. Arlene rejected Okla’s proposal more than a half-century
earlier. They live in Fairmont.
It was Okla’s 3rd
wife. A Decker once was Marlene’s husband.
The only way you can
purchase the fabulous book is by phoning the Edgells at (304) 816-3238. They
are the only sellers of the book, which costs $19.95.
