 Monongah High Alumni Banquet continues in 2024

The annual Monongah High Alumni Banquet WILL continue after the 100th on May 27th in the Knights of Columbus on Mary Lou Retton Drive in Fairmont!

Brenda Mills, Class of 1970, posted:

“We are going to continue the alumni going forward. I was asked if I would help with it because we don't want it to end.”

 

Brenda added:

 

“I loved so much about MHS. I loved the friends I made. Most of the teachers. A lot of the teachers, a lot of the activities. And the ball games.”

 

Roseann Orwig, Class of 1969, volunteered to help Brenda keep the fantastic Monongah High Alumni Banquet alive beyond 2023, adding “We plan to be in touch with Donna Davis (Monongah High Alumni Association treasurer who has handled the reservations and checks for decades) about carrying on the torch. Hopefully it will work out.”

 

Roseann attended Fairmont State and is a secretary at Fairmont General Hospital’s clinical laboratory.

 

Roseann told me “I always bring my mom, Kathern Loss, to the annual dinner/dance. She quite possibly is the oldest living graduate of MHS.”

 

Another Roseann Orwig is Class of 1942 and attended the 2014 Monongah High Alumni Banquet.

 

Her aunt is the late Lucille Blocker, daughter of John “J.B.” and Josephine (Dieling) Loss. Lucille married Richard Blocker.

 

One of Monongah’s amazing 62 Christmas street lights is a Soldier near Roseann’s home.

 

Brenda lives in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania but grew up in Four States while attending Monongah High. Brenda was at the 2021, 2018, 2017, 2016 Monongah High Alumni Banquets.

 

Colette Stanley Melton, also in Class of 1970, provided identifications for the 2021 MHS Banquet when Class of 1950 was the honor class for its covid-delayed 50th anniversary graduation as Lions:

Sheila Mills, who lives in Martins Ferry, Ohio, is Class of 1968 and has attended the 2021 Monongah High Alumni Banquet.

 

Sheila is Brenda’s cousin. Beatrice Salisbury  Mills, Class of 1951, who attended the 2011 and 2006 MHS Banquets, is Brenda’s cousin by marriage.

Roseann attended the 2021 gathering of Lions and Monongah residents that my sister, Jackie Olesky Straight, who lives in Rivesville, and I co-host in the Monongah Town Hall.

  Military hero Leon Charles Trader Passes away   Leon Charles Trader, who started with the Class of 1966 at Monongah High but left to join the Army. He was wounded in Vietnam, earning him the Purple Heart.   Everson resident Joseph Bombard , Class of 1966 along with Joe’s wife, Marva Holt Bombard, told me:   “ John Olesky , I knew Mr. Trader very well. He would have graduated class of 1966 but he quit school and joined the Army and was sent to Viet Nam where he was injured and received the Purple Heart.   “We grew up together in Everson. We hunted, fished and played kids sports together. Both our fathers were coal miners in those days. We played our sports games in a pasture field. JAMIE DAVIS RICHARDS PASSES AWAY. DAUGHTER OF MINNIE DAVIS AND CHICK DAVIS

  Jamie Davis Richards passes away   Jamie Davis Richards passed away. Her parents are Mary Ann “Minnie” Davis and Harry W. “Chick” Davis. Jamie’s siblings are Dianna Davis Fugera, Class of 1975 and Mark Davis, Class of 1978. Jamie married Tony Richards.   Monongah Mayor Johnboy Palmer posted: “ It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of Jamie Richards passing this evening after her courageous battle with cancer. Please join me in keeping her entire family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Jamie's strength and resilience will always be remembered. Rest in peace, Jamie.”

          BOB AND SHERRY MYERS COLANERO BURIAL JANUARY 12 Bob and Sherry Myers Colanero burial January 12   Bob Colanero, Class of 1960 passed away December 11 and his widow, Sherry Myers Colanero,   passes away two days later.   They will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with military honors on January 12, 2024. I missed it but Jim McDaniel, Class of 1960, who lives in Behoboth Beach, Delaware, sent me the sad news, posting “So much sadness in the world.” Jim served in the Air Force for 23 years. His grandfather, Carroll Currey, owned the hotel, bank and movie theater in Monongah, all in the same block. Carroll also had a car dealership on 7th street in Fairmont. Bob’s sister, Judith Nicola Colanero, predeceased Bob. Another sibling, Danny Colanero, lies in North Carolina with wife Linda. Judy’s brother, Paul Colanero, passed away in Georgia.
