Linda Lopez Gandy, president of the Monongah High Alumni Association, posted this important reminder:

“Don’t forget the 100th Monongah High School Alumni Banquet will be Saturday, May 27, 2023. At the Knights of Columbus in Fairmont, WV.

The honored classes will be 1963 and 1973. We are hoping that many alumni will attend, as this might be the last one.

MHS Alumni Association treasurer Donna Davis, who has handled the checks and many other things for decades, told me:

John Olesky I have been in touch with band, photographers and caterers. Everything is a go. I’m going to mail postcards to my classmates to see how many I can get to come in.”

Great idea! If YOU plan to attend the 100th Banquet then contact as many of your classmates as possible and see who will be joining you. I’ll publish names and photos (if provided to me) of everyone who makes a Reservation to attend the 100th Banquet!

Greta Martin Mike, Class of 1922, founded the Monongah Alumni Association in 1922 and came up with the first Monongah High Alumni Reunion that year, which was held in Mannington. Irene Waltz Joyce, Class of 1922, attended every MHS Alumni Banquet for 64 years.

Greta was married to Jimmy Mike, of the legendary Monongah Mike family barbers that included Dominic Mike and Mutt Mike.

The first Monongah High graduation class, in 1918, was four students – Dr. Stanley Skarr, a physician in Davis, West Virginia; Robert Jones; William Fay Holbert; and Sylvia Swisher.

They were in one room of the Thoburn Graded School building. In 1921 the name was changed from Thoburn High School to West Monongah High School.

The majority of the "Semi-Formal" banquets were in the Fairmont Hotel.  The banquet site was switched to Morgantown’s Ramada Inn in 1972. Later, it was moved again, to Westchester Village in Fairmont. When Westchester Village closed, the MHS Banquet switched to the K of C in 2014, its site every year including this 100th anniversary year.

The last graduation class at Monongah High was the Class of 1979 before Monongah consolidated into North Marion High. The Lions won state titles in football in 1952, 1955, 1968, 1969 and 1973, baseball in 1925 and 1955 and basketball in 1928.

In the Class of 1963 is Carol Echols-Winston Dorn, who lives in Milwaukee after a career in Milwaukee Public Schools.

After her University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee graduation, Carol worked for Agoodlook ENT in artist development.

In July 2012, at Fairmont's Red Roof Inn, Carol arranged for a reunion Echols and Winston family members.

If you want to re-connect with Carol, her email address is ckdorn285@gmail.com

Paulette Ellison, Class of 1969, says she’ll attend the 100th Banquet.

So does Sharon KIniceley Hawkins, Class of 1960, who told me “I would love to come. Please get all the info for regulation.”

Raymond Lewis, Jr. said that he would attend with his wife, Paula Kaye Huffman, Class of 1966. Cellphone: (757) 775-5595. 852 Deary Lane, Virginia Beach, VA 23451 for those who want to contact Paula.

Judy Mancino, Class of 1971, also said she will be there. Her email is jmancino2426@gmail.com in case you are in her class or still her friend and want to get together with Judy at the 100th bash!

Also Robin Satterfield, 1986 North Marion graduate.

Will you?
